LONDON, England: During a Commonwealth Games qualifying race for cycling this week, two cyclists were hospitalized and spectators required medical treatment after a crash saw an Olympic gold medalist launch into the crowd.
After both he and his bike were flung off the track, England's Matt Walls, 24, received medical treatment in the stands for almost 40 minutes.
Besides Walls, Isle of Man rider Matt Bostock was taken to hospital after a second accident involving several riders who collided on a turn.
After being treated, Walls was later released from the hospital.
In a statement, Team England said, "Matt Walls has been discharged with stitches in his forehead, scrapes and bruises, but thankfully no major injuries."
Bostock's team members said he underwent a CT scan, from which the initial results were positive.
While Walls was receiving treatment behind a temporary screen after the crash, the morning session of cycling was abandoned and spectators were asked to leave the Lee Valley velodrome.
One spectator received treatment for cuts to his arm, and a young girl also required medical assistance.
"I think the crashes are getting worse and it is because the speeds are getting higher, the positions on the bike are getting more extreme," said five-time Olympic champion Laura Kenny, as quoted by the Associated Press.
